Decatur’s Historic District faces an immediate threat from Georgia Power.

Georgia Power plans to run a 115,000-volt transmission line through one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.

Georgia Power will destroy the residential character of the neighborhood.

Massive power poles will turn it into an industrial corridor. They intend to remove hundreds of trees, install 100-foot steel poles in our front yards, and string high-voltage lines over our kids’ heads as they walk to school.

Join our fight to preserve one of Decatur’s historic neighborhoods.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

What is Georgia Power doing?

  •  Georgia Power Company intends to build an electric transmission line with an operating voltage of 115,000 volts, known as the Decatur – Scottdale Transmission Line.
  • The project is approximately 2.4 miles long and includes approximately 1.5 miles of high-voltage lines within a City of Decatur Historic District.

Are there viable alternative routes?

The City and the neighborhood support providing reliable power to the area and have identified viable alternative routes that do not run through a historic residential district and destroy the tree-lined character of the city.

How will it impact property values and quality of life??

  • Georgia Power will use eminent domain to claim easements in the yards of historic Decatur homes and place encumbrances on homeowner deeds, which will likely result in uncompensated losses in property values.
  • Old-growth trees in the neighborhood will be removed to allow massive steel power poles 4 feet in diameter and 100 feet high.
  • Decatur’s eastern gateway will change from leafy, tree-lined residential streets to an industrial corridor.
  • The charm, character, and safety of living in a historic Decatur neighborhood may be lost for good.

What are the health risks?

What is the timeline?

  • The City and property owners were kept in the dark while this project was being developed for seven years.
  • Georgia Power delayed notifying the neighborhood and the City of Decatur until the “eleventh hour” — possibly because it would be too late to change course.
  • Current status: The plans have been drawn, and Georgia Power is actively procuring land and easements.
  • Tree removal is slated for Q2 2025, and poles will be erected soon after.
